Energy-Efficient Water Heating Systems
Water heating in a typical home can account for up to 20 to 30 percent of annual energy usage. This energy use is often attributed to simple stand-by losses to heat and store hot water between times of use. Even more energy, and water, can be wasted when water has to travel long distances before reaching the point of use, so smart design and use of occupancy activated pumps that pull hot water to your faucet or shower before you turn on the tap save energy and water.
Benefit of Energy-Efficient Water Heating: Highly insulated storage tanks, certain types of on-demand heating and/or circulation systems, heat pump water heaters, and solar water heating systems can save 30 to 70 percent, or even more, on water heating energy use. More efficient designs also save water while providing equivalent, or improved supply capacity, which may also keep you from running out of hot water.
